Koa is considered an exotic wood and since it comes from Hawaii it's not hard to see why. Not only is it a beautiful tonewood to look at but the sound equals it's visual beauty. An instrument build with Koa benefits greatly from being played, when it's new Koa might sound a bit bright and tight, The more it gets played the better it wil start sounding. Once it starts to become 'played in' the sound of Koa tonewood opens up and becomes rich, sweet and considerably more resonant. Especially the low end becomes rich and full while the overall sound really comes to life.
OPEN PORE FINISH
